FMS:Now UI Update & Dark Mode Theme
At FM:Systems, I refreshed the FMS:Now mobile UI to match our corporate identity and Design System, and introduced a comprehensive Dark Mode experience to elevate usability and accessibility. The FMS:DarkMode theme was developed for submission to the 2022 FM:Systems annual Hackathon of which it was given the award for “Most Impactful”.
How it Started
FMS:Now is FM:Systems’ (now Johnson Controls OpenBlue) mobile-first desk and room‑booking app designed for hybrid workplaces. It focuses on quick reservations, floorplan-based booking, co‑worker visibility, and seamless integration with Microsoft Exchange for meeting scheduling.
It’s part of FM:Systems’ workplace management suite.
The Problem
At the time, FMS:Now suffered from an outdated interface, inconsistent visual design across the product suite, and poor WCAG compliance. This combination posed significant risks to user trust, business growth, and long‑term viability, introducing friction from first impressions through to daily use.
The Solution
To address these challenges, I led a comprehensive UI modernization initiative for FMS:Now.
The Result
The redesigned interface reflected FM:Systems’ corporate identity and Design System, establishing visual continuity across the product suite and improving overall usability.
Accessibility principles were integrated into the updated UI, strengthening readability, interaction clarity, and compliance readiness.
Dark Mode
I designed and delivered a full Dark Mode experience to enhance visual ergonomics and support user preferences in low‑light environments. This Dark Mode work formed the basis of our submission to the 2022 FM:Systems Hackathon, where it received the Most Impactful award.
These solutions collectively modernized the product, improved accessibility, and reinforced a unified, scalable design foundation for the broader FM:Systems ecosystem.
